Saira Banu

Music Director: Shankar Jaykishan (SJ)
Singers: M Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar.

It’s absolutely world class music. No wonder it was at the top position in the Binaca Geetmala (1962) loved by millions of Indians. This Radio program had 9,00,000 – 2,000,000 listeners.

The song was composed by Shankar Jaykishan A.K.A. “SJ”. Their music was so popular that they even got the prominence on the Movie Posters.

The Situation:
In the movie, the guy (Shammi Kapoor) who loves the girl (Saira Banu).. doesn’t want to leave the girl, so he tries to win her through this song. And that pretty much is the situation. 🙂

The Background of SJ:
SJ’s first music in Barsaat was a huge hit, so it’s like they became Raj Kapoor’s only choice in the Music Directors. This duo was the highest paid music composers in those days as their music was being loved by millions of people in India. Their Music made Raj Kapoor what he was and he is. If you think of Raj Kapoor, you remember the songs “Awara hu..”, “Pyar hua ikraar hua hai”, “Ye raat bheegi bheegi”, “Jane kaha gaye wo din”, etc. So the music of his films played an important role and he could build the “Rom” in just few years.

Why the 2 versions of this song:
As we all know, all our films are mostly musicals. So after the first version of the Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par song has been sung by M. Rafi, Shammi Kapoor suggested to have a female version of this song too in the movie somewhere in the scene.

Shankar Jaykishan asked Lata Mangeshkar to sing this version in the same “Sur” (at the exact music notes and pitch that M. Rafi had sung). This song has very high pitch note in the middle stanza. But Lata Mangeshkar has sung it at the same pitch, which in my opinion is very hard if you don’t have enough musical training and Riyaaz (Practice).

Lyrics with English Translation of this song

Lyrics In Hindi FontLyrics In Hindi English FontLyrics In English

Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par
Dil chahta hai woh kehne do
Mujhe tumse mohabbat ho gayi hai
mujhe palko ki chaav mein rehne do.a
Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par…

Tumne mujhko hasna sikhaaya..
Rone kahoge ro lenge ab..
Aansoo ka hamaare gham na karo..
Woh behte hai to behne do..
Mujhe tumse mohabbat ho gayi hai..

Chaahe banaa do chaahe mitaa do..
Mar bhi gaye to denge duwaayein..
Ud ud ke kahegi khaak sanam..
Yeh dard-e-mohabbat sehne do..
Mujhe tumse mohabbat ho gayi hai..
Mujhe palko ki chaav mein rehne do..
I would be indebted to you..
If you let me tell you what my heart desires
I have fallen in love with you..
please let me dwell in the shadow of your eyelashes
You would be doing me a great favor…

You were the one who taught me how to laugh..
Now, if you ask me to cry, I will cry..
Don’t be sad over my tears..
If they are falling, then let them fall..
I’ve fallen in love with you..
Let me dwell in the shadow of your eyelashes..
I would be indebted to you..

Make or Destroy if you want..
Even if it kills me, I will sing your praises..
Flying around, the ashes will say..
Let me bear the burdens of love..
For I have fallen in love with you..
Let me dwell in the shadow of your eyelashes..
I would be indebted to you..

What a wonderful song!
