This Chirabharni song gives kind of horror, suspenseful and little bit sad feeling. As per the lyrics it is kind of happy song, particularly describing the Haladi samarambha which is again a pre-marriage event. Haladi is an important event in Hindu marriages.

# The Music

When the music starts it gives a feeling of something bad is happening, also the visuals show the same thing. However, the lyrics of the song is about a kind of happy event known as Haladi sung by a group of ladies.

The challenge in this was to show both happy event and horrible situation of a girl who is about to marry. So the starting music gives kind of horror feel and when the singing starts, we get that it is a pre-marriage event. All this singing is in 7 beats (rupak taal), but then the beats start playing at odd beats which is an extraordinary thinking of Ajay Atul. There is a blend of 7 beats singing and 8 beats of percussion (drums and other instruments). This is kind of unusual in the music composition. Usually music directors have a certain beats set and the same beats continues throughout the song.

The music also has a different symphony to show sudden shift of emotions and situation. Generally this difficult situations are rendered through music using some odd beats, but in this case, it was change of beats which makes it hard to follow the song.

You can see the behind the scenes and how the beats were played in this video.

In this song, the music has change in beats like change of train tracks, like ekdamse waqt badal diye, jajbaat badal diye, and in this case, ekdamse beats badal diye. 😛

# The Meaning

This is based on what I had read through users comments. The song highlights emotion of a Tamasha dancers (tamasgirin in marathi) who is forced to marry old powerful or rich person. So she is scared of this and maybe she is also scared of some other people as we can see at the end of the song.

This sounds very unfair to tamasha dancers and people. The tamasha community in those days had this kind of event where dancers danced, and kind of auction used to take place. A rich person from the village or town used to purchase dancer and used to keep her in his second house or god knows where.

Thankfully this horrific thing had been discontinued in the late 1990s. So we don’t hear about this anymore. But this kind of brings a question on the surface, why would anyone start doing this kind of auction event. This is very fearful for a lady dancer.

# The Lyrics

Lyrics in MarathiLyrics in English

Laja gali ji kavali ga
Jhali haladina pivali ga
Halada lagali sajanachi
Rati jhali gam madanachi

Laja gali ji kavali ga
Jhali haladina pivali ga
Halada lagali sajanachi
Rati jhali gam madanachi

Aja jhali tu tarani ga
Rangali chira bharani ga
Chandanyata shej saajana sukhavila
Kali kovali hi phulavila

Payi jodavam chadhavila
Jiva sajana jadavila
Ritibhatina ujavila
Chuda kakana pichavila
Chandava tujhya rupadyacha
Sonya motyana sajavila
Chandanyata seja sajana sukhavila
Kali kovali hi phulavila

Payi jodavam chadhavila
Jiva sajana jadavila
Ritibhatinam ujavila
Chuda kakanam pichavila
